What Can the Remote Access Connection Manager Do?
Remote access connection is a Windows XP service that lets a user access a remote computer in a different location. Remote access in Windows XP Home Edition is enabled by default but the Professional Edition is disabled. Remote access can turned on manually in a Windows-based computer. This kind of connection is processed by a remote access connection manager which sets authentication and authorization. The manager which is usually installed in a network can allow or disallow a computer in its request for remote access to any computer within a network.
Microsoft’s Remote Access Connection Manager
Microsoft claims that its remote access connection manager provides security features to protect a user or a network from unwanted access. Authentication and authorization tools are used and these usually set the requirements that computers or outside systems requesting for remote access must fulfil before they can be granted access or connection to a computer or a network. When a connection has been established between a remote system and a network, data is passed to the remote system and the network is encrypted so that it can ensure that only specific parts of the network are visible and can be accessed. The restriction is based on what are only needed to fulfil the requests of the remote system which has been granted access. As a condition, if a remote system cannot fulfil the requirements of authentication and authorization, it is blocked out from any kind of access to the network.
However, a network is still susceptible to security breach even if it employs encryption when a remote system is allowed access. This is true in the case that most of attacks in Windows-based computers came from remote access through the Internet. The vulnerabilities of certain applications and services which are enabled by default allowed remote systems to exploit the vulnerabilities of Windows. These are important to note because there are no 100% guarantees of full security simply by using the remote access connection manager. Additional security features should be added to individual computers and networks. Network administrators and computer users should know what applications and services are actually required to run and what among these can be disabled in order to heighten security of Windows. It would not hurt to turn off the remote access feature altogether if it is not needed. This Windows service might be enabled by default but it can be easily disabled. This feature should be maximized so that it is best to only enable it when the need arises.
The best remote access connection manager software
A remote access connection manager software cannot do the job of protecting a network or computers within a network from damaging remote connection. The internet has many remote sources which can damage networks and computers through the abuse of this feature. Knowledge on how the Windows operating systems work and the services that come with is very important. Understanding how its remote access works helps so that in cases of security breach, a network or a computer can easily be protected from damage or further damage.
